Item 1: Aluminium Foil Most people know that you can recycle aluminium cans but hardly anyone knows that you can recycle clean aluminium. Did you know that on the Gold Coast only 3% of aluminium foil is recovered for recycling. This shows that more people need to know that they can recycle this. Item 2: Aerosol Can ![]() Many people are completely unaware you can recycle empty aerosol cans. But before you recycle them you have to remove their lids and put them in the recycle bin separately. On the Gold Coast there is only a 16% recovery rate for recycling for aerosol cans and paint tins. This shows that the majority of people are not aware of what you can recycle in your bin. Item 3: Chip, Bread and Muesili Bar Packaging Some people know that you can recycle your plastic bags at Coles. But not so many people know that you can also recycle chips, muesil bar, bread packaging and many other items. Last year across Coles 500 participating stores they recycled over 299 tonnes of soft plastics. All this recycled plastic gets made into outdoor furniture for pre-schools, schools and Coles stores. Chip, muesil bar and bread packaging is just a few of the items you can recycle through this program. For a full list of the things you can recycle at Coles click here. Item 4: Batteries Every single year 8,000 tonnes of batteries are landfilled. Thats 300 million household batteries. When in the landfill they often leak chemicals into local waterways and habitats threatening wildlife. But Aldi is trying to stop that. So next time you go to Aldi drop off your AAA, AA, C, D, and 9v sized batteries. Item 5: Ink Cartages Did you know that Aussies landfill 34 printer cartridges every single minute. Thankfully Planet Ark has made a program to tackle this problem. So far they have diverted over 34,572,740 cartridges from going into landfill. Thats enough to fill 62 olympic swimming pools. You can drop cartridges off at the collection boxes at participating Officeworks, The Good Guys, Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi, Australia Post, Office National and Office Products Depot stores. Or if you want to register a collection box for your work place or school click here. Item Six: Nespresso Coffee Capsules Terracycle is a fantastic organisation with countless recycling programs. One of the programs is for Nespresso Coffee Capsules. The coffee grounds are composted and the aluminium is used to create new aluminium products such as car and bike parts. So hold onto your Nespresso Capsules and drop them off at one of over 300 collection points Australia wide. The amount of collection points in Australia has double in just 12 months. This morning I attended the fourth annual Surfrider Foundation Eco Challenge at Coolangatta. There were so many great educational stalls. I learnt a lot at the event. One fact I learnt is that unfortunately only 3 to 5 per cent of all the plastic in the world are recycled. The local musicians music were great. It was so good to see the event taking sustainability to the next level. They had recycle and compost bins as well a water bottle re-fill station. I was thrilled to learn that this event was plastic free and was also completely solar powered. Only if all events would step up and be as sustainable as the Surfrider Foundation Eco Challenge.
Surfrider Fundation is a fantastic organisation making such a difference to conserving the vast stretches of Australia's beaches. They have a great campaign called Rise Above Plastics. It may alarm you to know that not one Australian beach is litter free. But thanks to Surfrider less litter is ending up on our beaches. Make sure to get involved with their conservation programs and to check out there amazing work here. Thank you for reading Enviro Warrior |
