Recently I went to Devil Ark. Devil Ark is a state of the art breeding facility for Tassie Devils in the Barrington Tops of New South Wales. At the moment there is around 135 healthy devils at the ark and they have bred around 150 devils! But in 2011 they started with only 44 devils. It was so interesting to see all the Devils different personalities. Some were curious and really inquisitive and others were more shy and wary and didn't want to go near you. Many of the Devils were hand raised and loved cuddles from their keepers.
Tasmanian Devils main threat is Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD) which started in the late 1990s. The tumours cause eating problems and make the Devils starve to death. Since 1996 wild populations of Tasmanian devils have plummeted by 90%. Three quarters of Tasmanian Devils in the wild are infected by the disease! If this isn't bad enough many of them get hit by cars when they are scavenging for food. Some scientists believe that they could be extinct in 15-20 years!
That is why organisations like Devil Ark are so crucial. Devil Ark is a non-profit registered charity that is committed to ensuring the survival of the Tasmanian Devil. If you would like to help them so they can continue their great work you can donate to Devil Ark here.
But after seeing the amazing work they do I have hope for the Devils future. I would like to say a big thank you to the volunteers and staff at Devil Ark for the fantastic day we had there and also for helping to make a brighter future for this amazing species.
