1. Sign Our Petition To Ban The Release Of Helium Balloons In Queensland
Balloons are often released at events and what goes up must come down, littering beaches, the ocean and waterways. Threatening countless animal species. The amount of balloon litter on our beaches has tripled in just ten years. Balloons especially affect highly endangered Sea Turtles. So when a Sea Turtle eats one they are at risk of floating syndrome, which makes them float on the surface of the water so they can't dive down to eat and they are also more likely to get hit by boats. The streamers attached to balloons are also a problem as they can easily get entangled around birds feet and make them drop off eventually because of the lack of circulation. Releasing balloons is littering and it is just glorified pollution.
But you can help stop this please sign the Queensland Youth Environment Councils petition to ban the realise of helium balloons in Queensland. To sign click here.
2. Take 3
Plastic pollution is such a huge problem. But never has such a large problem had a simple solution. That solution is for every one to do their little bit. Please pick up three pieces of rubbish when you go out. You may think that this is not much but it adds up. If you do this over a year, you will have picked up 1,095 pieces of litter.
3. Report People Who Litter
Most people don't know that you can report people who litter. But you can. Please if you see someone litter report it so they can be fined and hopefully stop littering. If you want to report someone littering in Queensland click here.
4. Say No To Single Use
A huge source of litter is single use plastic items for example, plastic cutlery, plates, balloons, cups and straws. The company's rely on people to keep buying them to keep producing these products. It is really easy to avoid these items. Drink out of the cup instead of having a straw and say no to them when you go out for dinner. Instead of plastic cups, cutlery and plates use re-usable ones.
5. Have Your Own little Clean Up
Organise a day when family and friends come together and clean up your local park, beach or waterway. It doesn't have to be a massive event. You could have one of these family friend clean ups every double of months.
