Today I attended a Citizen Science Mangrove Watch training session by Ocean Connect, a non profit organisation on the Gold Coast dedicated to research, education and connecting people with the ocean beaches and Mangroves. By participating in the Citizen Science Mangrove Watch program you can help collect valuable data which contributes to research and conservation.
Mangroves have a pretty bad rap but the truth is that they are very important. They are nursing grounds for countless fish species. Just to give you an idea 7 out of 10 fish at the fish and chips shop spent some of their life in a mangrove habitat. Mangroves absorb more carbon emissions than Rainforest plants. Mangrove ecosystems are important resting places for migratory birds.
