Say No and Pressure Palm Oil
The production of Palm Oil is a huge problem. The size of 300 football fields are being chopped and burned every hour for this ingredient. In 2007 the Guinness World Records gave Indonesia the world record for the worst deforestation in the world! The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) declared Palm Oil as the main driver of deforestation in this country. By 2020 98% of Indonesia’s lowland forests will be gone! 90% of the Orangutans habitat has been destroyed. It is reported that 50 Orangutans die a week! Orangutans are a key stone species because they spread rainforest seeds and many seeds can only germinate if they have been through the gut of this primate. If we do nothing about this other species such as, Sumatran Tigers (less than 400 left) will be extinct in less than three years and in five to ten years the Sumatran Orangutan will be extinct! 300,000 different species are affected by palm oil.
That is why it is so important the we try our best to boycott product that have this oil (it is often called vegetable oil in the ingredients). Another thing we can do is encourage companies that are using palm oil to make the switch to sunflower oil, which is the much more environmentally friendly alternative.
Grow Native Plants In Your Garden
A major threat for species both fauna and flora is habitat destruction. That is why it is more important now then ever before that we create our own habitat in your own garden. By planting the right things we can create a home for wildlife. Plants like bottlebrush, banksia and grevilleas attract birds while other plants like Matt Rush, a native grass, are fantastic for frogs and bandicoots. Do some research on what wildlife species are in your local area and what plants attract them. If you want some inspiration or just want to learn more about native gardening download the free Gro Native app.
