Unlike most animals of its size the komodo dragon is very good at climbing trees and running! Some people think it's breath is the worst in the world. Komodo Dragons actually mark their territory! Believe it or not they are one of the smartest reptiles in the world! Komodo Dragons are a part of the goanna & monitor family. All of their senses are very good. Some scientist believe they can smell 8-10 Km away. It is extremely fast! Little is known about the Komodo Dragon. Komodo Dragons have A territory of only A few square miles.
The Komado Dragon is the world's largest lizard! They can reach up to 10 feet in length! It can weigh up to 200 pounds!
The komodo dragon only lives on five small remote volcanic islands in the far east of indnesia. Most of these islands are part of Komodo National Park. Only one of these tiny islands appear on the map of the world! These islands are located in the far, far east of the Indian Ocean. They probably got to these islands by swimming across the oceans!
Diet and Feeding
Komodo dragons are huge opportunists so they will eat any carrion that they can get away with but they can search not eating for a very long time. They will come in large groups to feed on carrion! As soon as they pick up the scent of something they want to eat, there is no stopping them! Komodo dragons are stealth predators. They can be canabalistic! This means they will eat smaller Komodo Dragons! When they hunt their prey the komodo dragon can almost run 12 miles an hour. Their teeth are like curved razor blades. Designed for bringing prey down. The digestive juices in the komodo dragon stomach is capable of digesting bone, horns and hooves. They can eat Water Buffalo which is five times bigger than them! Anything that moves attracts their attention.
Breeding, Caring For Young and Early Life
The male komodo dragons will fight brutal battles for a female. This only happens in-between May and Augest. As soon as the baby hatches it goes up the closest tree. It does this because it doesn't want to be eaten. Even their own parents will eat them. It feeds on insects and possibly small geckos and snakes. Only very few survive to adulthood.
The Komado Dragons will eat live stock and when the farmers find out they will kill the gorgeous Komado Dragons! Another threat is habitat destruction.
