Yangtze Giant Softshell Turtle
These massive soft-shell turtles can reach the weight of 120kg! The last male in captivity is the largest soft-shell turtle ever!
They live in the Yangtze river running through China & Vietnam.
They can lay 20-80 eggs!
Perhaps the world's most endangered animal, there is only 4 left in the world! A male and female in captivity & two males in the wild in Vietnam. This soft-shell turtle faces many threats in the wild. These threats include habitat destruction, pollution, over hunting for the food trade & pet trade.
There are surveys being carried out to try and find more wild specimens. But I believe that the future of the species depends on the Suzhou Zoos & the Changsha Zoos effects to breed the last two which are in captivity. So far they have produced seven egg clutches but none of them hatched. But the breeding program continues.
